The old 80's draft hood, low efficiency Furnaces used inefficient disposable standard fiberglass 16x25x1" filters. The industry engineers refer to them as "boulder catchers" since they only trap large dust particles. Sadly, many homeowners started using the High Density 1" pleaded filters. The problem with these is that they restrict the Furnace and AC air flow which can result in cracked Furnace Heat Exchangers and frozen AC during cooling season. Many HVAC contractors still install these 1" filters with their new installations, mostly due to a lower cost.
The Electrostatic Filters were mostly obsoleted due to their generation of Ozone which can cause respiratory problems as per several recent medial and engineering studies.
Since the new High Efficiency Furnaces and Air conditioners contain complex electronic and mechanical parts, requiring designed air flow for proper equipment operation it is imperative that the air flow entering the equipment is not impeded and no dust enters the HVAC system. We recommend professionally installed Media filter systems (Website temporarily being rebuilt) as well as UV sterilization lights.
These Media pleaded filters process 100% of the return air and trap particles as small as 3 microns! On average, these filters are replaced every 6 month but may last as long as 1 year. As uncaring contractors continue to install the old, inefficient 1 inch filter housings, possible resulting problems can be seen on the Cooling page.
